Entrepreneur 'humiliated' after London Tech Week turns her and baby away

The Guardian

An entrepreneur has told how she was left feeling "humiliated" after being turned away from London Tech Week, an annual corporate event, because she was with her baby daughter. Davina Schonle was prevented from entering the event on Monday after travelling for three hours with her eight-month-old and had to cancel meetings with potential suppliers to her tech startup. Schonle told TheBusinessDesk.com that as she went to the entrance with her daughter in her pram: "I was asked if I was a VIP. I was then told I wasn't allowed in with a baby. I went to get my badge, but was then taken over to the organisers from Informa, who told me they weren't insured. But they asked again if I was a VIP or speaker, and later another lady came over and twisted my badge around to see, clearly checking to see if I was a VIP."

There should be a new Hippocratic Oath to ensure patient safety in the modern age of medicine that includes people working in healthcare technology, according to a doctor and medical entrepreneur. Dr Jordan Shlain, Founder of Private Medical, made the comments at the CogX AI conference in King's Cross this week. The UK's medical tech sector is worth £7.6billion and employs 115,000 people across 3,700 companies. "Medicine is not just algorithms, there is a lot of humanity and emotions that goes into an interaction," he said. Highlighting the increased spending on healthcare in the UK, alongside a dip in lifespan and satisfaction scores, he said that while advances in AI have the potential to revolutionise healthcare, tech providers must distinguish consumers from patients and take responsibility for their actions.

London might be tussling with Uber over its taxi license and grappling with Brexit, but it wants you to know that it's still a major hub for artificial intelligence. On Monday the city's Mayor, Sadiq Khan, promoted a survey he'd commissioned that suggested London was the "capital" of AI for Europe. "London has twice as many AI companies as Paris and Berlin combined," Khan said on the sidelines of the launch of London Tech Week, a collection of 200 tech events across the city that also kicked off on Monday. Khan denied his transport office was smothering innovation by moving to take away Uber's taxi license last year. "We're not saying'no' to innovation, but'no' to rule-breaking," he said.
